The Golden Chain : Yitskhok-Leybush Peretz and his Literary Heritage
Season of cultural events and exhibition in partnership with the Library of the Jewish Community of Zurich and the Center for Jewish Studies at Basel University.

Although his career in Yiddish literature lasted only 27 years (1888–1915), throughout this time Yitskhok-Leybush Peretz produced a considerable body of work including prose, poetry, plays and critical essays. He is traditionally seen as one of the three founders of modern yiddish literature (along with Mendele Moykher-Sforim et Sholem-Aleykhem), and Peretz was also the mentor of an entire generation of writers and artists who saw him as something of a spiritual guide. He was constantly developing new forms of writing, and was influenced by both classical European as well as Jewish traditions. His almost prophetic vision of the world meant that he was one of the first Yiddish writers to embrace socialist ideals. From 1906 onwards, he was the first to foresee the risks of authoritarian tendencies. His gradual shift towards an ideology based on spirituality continues to appeal to modern readers. His work for the theatre can still help us understand dilemmas in contemporary society, while his novels offer an endless source of beauty.
On this, the occasion of the centenary of Peretz’s death, the exhibtion : « The Golden Chain » : Yitskhok-Leybush Peretz and his literary heritage » places Peretz and his literary career in the context of the world in which he lived , presenting evidence of his impact on the creative people of his own times and those who followed. Artists’ engravings from the original editions will be on display along with numerous editions of Peretz’ work and literary criticism.

Yitskhok-Leybush Peretz’ home in Warsaw, on Ceglana Street, became something of an obligatory passage for all aspiring Yiddish writers. Writers such as Sholem Asch, Sh. An-ski, Dovid Bergelson, Der Nister, Alter Kacyzne, Hersh-Dovid Nomberg, Yoysef Opatoshu, Dovid Pinski, Avrom Reyzen, Lamed Shapiro, Itshe-Meyer Vaysenberg and Yehoyesh, all started their careers here.
Moderated by Gilles Rozier, with Yitskhok Niborski and Natalia Krynicka.

Presentation of the author, his friends and family, the town where he was born – Zamosc – as well as his literary entourage and, of course, Warsaw, where he was a major figure on the art scene (1890–1915).
